About the Intergovernmental Collaborations Program
The Tribal-State-Federal Intergovernmental Collaboration (IGC) Training and Technical Assistance (T/TA) Program is administered by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). BJA has supported intergovernmental collaboration since the 1990s. More recently the Tribal Law and Order Act (TLOA) recognized the fundamental need for cooperation between Tribal, Federal and State entities to reduce crime and achieve public safety in Indian country and nearby communities and coordination between the primary federal agencies – U.S. Departments of Justice, Interior and Health and Human Services.
Roundtable Description
In 2023, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) reauthorization was enacted. As part of the VAWA 2023 provisions, tribes were authorized to implement Special Tribal Criminal Jurisdiction (STCJ) over specified crimes when such crimes are perpetrated by non-Indians. This roundtable will include an introduction to the STCJ provisions of the VAWA and the impact of those provisions on law enforcement. During this roundtable participants will be invited to share their experiences, issues and concerns regarding the implementation of STCJ and more specifically the impact of implementation on law enforcement agencies serving tribal communities.
