About the Consultation

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) will conduct a Government-to-Government Tribal Consultation on Monday, November 18, 2024, from 1:00pm to 5:00pm, at the Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder in Santa Fe, NM. The BJA Consultation will take place the day immediately prior to the Office on Violence Against Women’s 19th annual Violence Against Women Act Consultation.

The purpose of each consultation is to solicit recommendations from tribal government leaders on the following topics:

  • BJA’s tribal assistance funding.
  • Ways that BJA can make its funding more accessible to federally recognized tribes.
  • Adding a new Purpose Area to the Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation (CTAS) to support the development, implementation, and enhancement of treatment courts.
  • Interest in BJA allowing tribes to designate nonprofit organizations to apply for BJA’s CTAS Purpose Areas on behalf of tribes.

Who can submit testimony?

Elected tribal leaders of federally recognized tribes or their authorized designee can submit testimony.

How does my tribe authorize a delegate?

An elected tribal leader can elect to have another tribal member provide testimony on their behalf. A designee must submit written authorization from the elected tribal leader in order to fulfill this role. The written documentation should include the individual being designated as the representative, be in the form of a letter, on official letterhead, signed be the elected tribal leader. Letters can be sent to BJAtribalfunding@usdoj.gov.

How can my tribe share testimony?

Testimony can be shared in person, as a virtual recording, or as a written email.

  • Oral testimony: in-person on November 18, 2024.
  • Recorded virtual testimony (three sessions to choose from). Three virtual recording sessions will be held via Zoom for tribal leaders and designees who wish to provide verbal testimony but are unable to attend in person.
  • Written testimony via email to: BJAtribalfunding@usdoj.gov. BJA welcomes written testimony now until 11:59 p.m. ET on December 18, 2024, 30 days after the Tribal Consultation Session.
