Department of Justice COPS Office Grant Announcements

The Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) recently opened several grant opportunities that are open to Tribal law enforcement agencies.

COPS Hiring Program (CHP)

The 2025 COPS Hiring Program is a competitive grant program designed to provide funds directly to law enforcement agencies to hire new or rehire existing career law enforcement officers and to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.  All local, state, territorial, and tribal law enforcement agencies that have primary law enforcement authority are eligible to apply.  Up to $156 million is available for this program.

Community Policing Development (CPD) Microgrants Program

The FY25 Community Policing Development (CPD) Microgrants program provides funding to local, state, tribal, and territorial law enforcement agencies to implement novel or innovative projects that work to solve problems in the agency or community, to advance crime fighting, community engagement, problem solving, or organizational changes in support of community policing. Under this funding opportunity, the COPS Office will fund projects in the following subcategories: Uplifting the Image of the Law Enforcement Profession, Violent Crime Prevention, Officer Recruitment, Hiring and Retention, Immigration and Border Security, Opioid and Drug Market Interruption,

Homelessness and Squatting, and Open Topic Area. There is approximately $8.8 million in funding for multiple awards available through the FY25 CPD Microgrant program. Each award is two years (24 months) in length. There is no local match.

CPD Accreditation: Supporting Law Enforcement Agencies in Seeking Accreditation

The Supporting Law Enforcement Agencies in Seeking Accreditation funding opportunity is to support law enforcement agencies seeking accreditation. Under this funding opportunity, the COPS Office will fund costs related to obtaining accreditation from an existing law enforcement accreditation entity. The fiscal year 2025 Supporting Law Enforcement Agencies in Seeking Accreditation funding opportunity will fund multiple awards, up to $250,000 each.

Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act (LEMHWA) Program

The Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act (LEMHWA) program will fund the delivery of and access to mental health and wellness services for law enforcement officers and their families through the implementation of peer support, training, family resources, suicide prevention, stress reduction, clinical support, and other promising practices for wellness programs. There is approximately $9.5 million in funding available through the FY25 LEMHWA implementation projects. Each award is two years (24 months) in duration for a maximum of $200,000 per award. There is no local match.

Safer Outcomes: Enhancing De-Escalation and Crisis Response Training for Law Enforcement – Support for Law Enforcement Agencies

The Safer Outcomes: Enhancing De-Escalation and Crisis Response Training for Law Enforcement program seeks to promote safe outcomes during police encounters with persons in crisis through relevant training. Awards under this funding opportunity will be made to law enforcement agencies seeking to implement training and related supports on this topic. Training is supported for law enforcement officers, support personnel employed by law enforcement agencies, and mental health professionals working on crisis intervention teams as employees of a law enforcement agency or under a legal agreement with a law enforcement agency. There is approximately $14 million in funding available through this funding opportunity. $250,000 for agencies with a budgeted strength of less than 50 full-time sworn officers, $350,000 for agencies with a budgeted strength of 50–200 full-time sworn officers, and $500,000 for agencies with a budgeted strength of more than 200 full-time sworn officers. There is no local match required. Performance period for awards is 24 months.
