Government-to-government consultation with the U.S. Department of Justice on the Department’s plan to consolidate the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, the Office of Justice Programs, and the Office on Violence Against Women into a single grantmaking component named the Bureau of Justice Grants. A framing paper providing additional background information and outlining issues for discussion accompanies this letter. DOJ Tribal Consultation | Annual Office on Violence Against Women Tribal Consultation | Tulalip, Washington – September 9-11, 2026
The 21st Annual Government-to-Government Violence Against Women Tribal Consultation will be conducted in-person September 9- 11, 2026, at the Tulalip Resort in Tulalip, Washington. The Department of Justice (DOJ) will be joined by other federal stakeholders, including the United States Departments of Health and Human Services and the Interior. The DOJ will conduct the Tribal Consultation over two and a half days.
Pursuant to 34 U.S.C. § 20126, the purpose of the Violence Against Women Tribal Consultation is to solicit recommendations from Tribal leaders on the following topics:
• Administering Tribal funds and programs;
• Enhancing the safety of Indian women from domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, homicide, stalking, and sex trafficking;
• Strengthening the federal response to such violent crimes; and
• Improving access to local, regional, state, and federal crime information databases and criminal justice information systems.
The report summarizing Tribal leader testimony from the 2025 Tribal Consultation (held in January 2026 due to the government shutdown in Fall 2025) will be emailed to Tribal leaders and attendees and posted on the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) website at: www.justice.gov/ovw/tribal-consultation. OVW will also email and post any consultation framing papers and related materials, along with OVW’s update report on the status of 2025 Consultation recommendations.
