A new NIJ research report finds that violence against American Indians (AI) and Alaska Natives (AN) is more common than violence against others — far more common than previous research indicated. More than four in five AI and AN adults have experienced some form of violence in their lifetime. Women and men experienced similar overall levels of violence, but women experienced higher levels of stalking and sexual violence.
Using a nationally representative sample from the 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, the report provides estimates of sexual violence, physical violence by intimate partners, stalking, and psychological aggression by intimate partners. It also provides data on violence by interracial and intraracial perpetrators and examines the impact of violence on the victims.
