This conference is designed for tribal justice system officials to explore recent legal updates and strategies to improve responses to violent crime in tribal communities.

Topics include:

  • Criminal Jurisdiction & Legal Updates: Including VAWA special tribal criminal jurisdiction, and key cases like Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta and United States v. Cooley.
  • Addressing Vicarious Trauma in tribal justice professionals.
  • Community-Based Strategies for violence prevention and response.
  • Data-Driven Approaches to violent crime.
  • Coordinated Responses to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP).
  • Building Capacity to combat drug trafficking.
  • Post-Adjudication Supervision through tribal reentry and probation.

Roundtable discussions will focus on:

  • Types of violence in tribal communities and related strategies, resources, and programs.
  • Addressing unmet needs and improving collaboration in violent crime responses.
