On behalf of the Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice, the American Probation and Parole Association, the Tribal Judicial Institute of University of North Dakota, and the National Tribal Judicial Center of the National Judicial College, you are invited to participate in
A Dialogue on the Tribal Law and Order Act (TLOA) Implementation of Enhanced Sentencing Authority.
This session has been proposed to bring together tribes who have gone through the journey of implementation of enhanced sentencing authority to share why they chose to implement TLOA, their process for implementation, the successes and challenges they experienced, and any other information they feel is critical for tribes moving forward. All faculty and participants will be given an opportunity to provide information to DOJ representatives on funding, training and technical assistance needs regarding TLOA implementation.
This event will provide valuable information to all disciplines and representatives that may be impacted through the expansion of sentencing authority, including tribal leaders, public defenders, prosecutors, law enforcement, victims' advocates, community corrections (pretrial, probation, and reentry), service providers, community members, and others.
Agenda for the Dialogue Session:
- Day 1: Up to four tribal communities will share stories of their journey to implement TLOA.
- Day 2: Discussions focused on key TLOA implementation components. In addition, discussion will focus on how the exercise of TLOA by tribal courts may impact coordination between U.S. Attorney's Office and tribal law enforcement officials to charge, decline or terminate federal prosecution and share case evidence.
Logistical Information:
- CTAS Purpose Area 3 and Purpose Area 4 grantees can use funds to cover the costs for attending this event. A limited number of scholarships are available.
